Pen Tablet in a Hospital setting

Medical Applications

In health care, pen computing can replace traditional forms and even laptops. With wireless add-ons, entire floors can be communicating in a single day.

Whether you're running standard Windows applications (for example, Meditech) or we build your Hospital's custom front-end for data input, dramatic information turnarounds are possible using this technology.

Medical Software on a Pen Tablet Pen Systems has created numerous private health care solutions, as well as deployed equipment solely for the purpose of running 3rd party medical software.

A few white papers are accessible on this page to illustrate the experiences of some other hospitals and health care providers automating their field data capture:

The Palm OS and Pocket PC devices are gaining acceptance in hospitals, also.

CEe.r. and PalmTriage

The needs of the typical hospital, private or public, are accuracy and efficiency.

Screen shots of the iPaq version of CEe.r. Triaging is one of the activities which is the benchmark of a hospital's performance. How the Emergency Room is run and emptied is of paramount importance - any time savings in the e.r. are of huge value.

Pen Systems' emergency room solutions and handheld medical software are designed to make the act of creating and maintaining a Patient's Chart a simple and efficient process. Using CEe.r., for example, the patient can be automatically Triaged (rated) while the examination is progressing - the examiner can generate a typical Chart in hardcopy format with an unfinished examination, allowing a "normal" chart to be available in the e.r. extremely quickly.

Stepped Approach

CEe.r. was created originally as a research project, working closely with Best Emergency Charting Inc. (Ontario). Originally developed on the Fujitsu PenCentra tablet for maximum number of windows/doctor; Pen Systems has gone on to develop versions for the IPAQ (PPC) and the PALM hardware platforms.

The goal of this software is to be able to provide a paper-chart-replacement product, which is capable of generating a hardcopy chart for use in the e.r. up to the floors from the handheld. A Further Goal is to run the same software wirelessly throughout the hospital, eliminating the need for a paper chart entirely.

Typically a hospital has to walk before it runs into the electronic world: thus we have a stepped approach to the installation of the solution. Firstly the e.r. starts using the solution for rapid creation of charts; secondly the e.r. adds wireless connectivity to print remote from the floor; next the charts go electronic and automatically update the hospitals legacy system (eg: Meditech, Haas, etc...) for patient tracking; finally the functions of the handheld are expanded to include remote lookup of other department's results (again using the legacy system extensively).

Departments

Pen Systems has solutions for the Emergency, Respiratory and other departments; as well as excellent results with private practices where time is of a premium. Different part of the practice or hospital require different solutions sometimes - we will consult with your IT department as well as the departments themselves to ensure the most ergonomic and practical paper-replacement solution is in use in that department.

A Lab, for example, is not suitable for a palm-based solution, rather in labs we use more static touch-screen devices, whereas a Lab member out collecting blood samples would definitely use a Palm device for scanning patient wrist bands and sample tubes.

Doctors and Nurses

We quickly realized during the consultative phase of the development of our medical solutions that different users require different solutions. Nurses require fewer "windows of information" than a Doctor when looking at the same patient; yet we want them both to use the same software.

Using CEe.r. a Nurse can access most of the screens a Doctor can, but the Doctor can see more at the same time and receives ongoing patient "summary" updates (scrolling summaries of charts and results).

Palm Triage Screen Capture Times and dates of when orders were carried out, observations made and the like are all locked into the records in CEe.r. and PalmTriage - making coding a simple procedure later on, as well as ensuring only the latest information is sent to the users.

Pen System's medical solutions are a bigger story than we can usefully describe on this page - we would be delighted to consult with your Hospital's IT department or the Emergency room - we can meet with you virtually or actually visit and discuss the possibilities of setting up an electronic patient recording system for you.
