Mobile, Rugged, and Wireless

MOBILE, RUGGED, and WIRELESS

Pen computers are wireless, amazingly mobile and rugged. They are lightweight and easy to use. And since field personnel alone enter the data once, right at the source, pen computing protects the integrity of vital corporate information. Data transposition errors are history. And, by keeping valuable professionals in the field instead of the office, pen computing boosts productivity. One pen computing industry analyst reports return on investment in as little as six months, along with a 12 to 15 percent annual increase in profitability. So, what is wireless and mobile computing?

PEN FOR INPUT
Pen computers and wearable computers do not have keyboards, and can therefore be used by any employee who can write, speak or point. The user inputs data into the computer using a pen, or stylus; or via voice commands. In some cases we can provide the user with a totally hands-free solution by using a heads-up display and a special "virtual pointer" for data input. The data is converted into typed characters using handwriting recognition software, or it can be stored as ink and integrated with bitmap illustrations. The stylus or pointer system can also be used as a mouse to select items from a list, for example. And it can be used to enter commands.

FROM SIMPLE FORMS TO HIGH-END CAD
Pen computing like this supports a variety of applications. The hand-held data collector can be used for simple form-filling operations. More detailed forms can be carried into the field on clipboard-sized lightweight tablets. Even CPU-intensive applications, such as CAD, GIS and mapping can be done on powerful -- and portable -- pen computers. The illustration on this page shows a wearable computer: the unit is worn as a belt which contains all the CPU and battery components - the only exposed piece of equipment is the screen (which is moist/dust proof).

CONNECTIVITY
Field data can be transferred from the pen computer into the corporate information system using a variety of technologies, including the standard communications port, infrared ports, by means of a cradle -- either equipped with infrared connectors or hard-wired, at a docking station, or using wireless communication technologies, such as radio modems, cellular modems with cellular phones, and wireless LAN adapters such as the Bluetooth standard. Mobile wireless connections are opening up new capabilities. For example, they allow a supervisor to transmit work orders to a specific field technician directly along with email and data files. Using the emerging wireless standards such as Bluetooth, we can create zones of connectivity which will keep you updated the instant you walk into one of these zones.

Pen computers and wearables are designed to be integrated with the user's existing legacy system. They are also extremely flexible and versatile. Most have at least one PCMCIA port, so that extra functions can be added, such as a fax-modem. PCMCIA LAN adapters are also available so the pen pc can be connected to host or networked systems. Memory and storage capacities can also be boosted as required. New hardware can be simply added this way, eg: GPS receivers, digital cameras etc . . .

EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES
Pen Systems also strives to design solutions that support emerging new technologies, including new wireless standards, voice, image capture, plug-in's for laser and surveying devices etc . . .

Pen computing is being used around the world in a wide range of industries. Our company, however, is devoted to creating the applications which "turn it all on". It's where we came from. It's what we know. It's what we do best.... we're intregrators at heart and know well that without the right software to make it all happen the hardware is little more than a toy.

SUDBURY, ONTARIO CANADA
Our company is based in Sudbury, Ontario in Canada, a major mining camp where both Inco and Falconbridge Limited run massive nickel-copper hardrock mining operations. Sudbury is also a centre of excellence in mining manufacturing and support services. For our company, it is a strategically important location, from which we have developed long term ongoing relationships with an international mining clientele. As more time goes by we are finding our solutions in Municipalities, Hospitals, Utilities and Power industries -> wherever you find our vertically integrated solutions you find total solutions which work and empower users to go beyond their job descriptions.
