IN THE CORE SHACKCore logging is a vital element of exploration and the assessment of potential deposits of ore. In the past, the core analyst filled out numerous forms to maintain a log of drilled cores, establishing a link between the exploration geologist, mine planners and management.
REBUILDING THE SHACKPen Systems, in partnership with Falconbridge Limited, has developed alternative core logging applications - versions of the software application PenCoreTM. Instead of filling out a paper form, the geologist using PenCore completes an electronic form on a pen-based computer. Handwriting recognition software converts the geologists entry to typed characters. The geologist then up-loads the data to the main diamond drill hole data base for immediate processing, including the production of printed logs, section plots and ore reserves.By employing pen-based computing, Falconbridge has realized large cost savings in time, energy, and through error elimination. Although pen-based computers and data collectors have been on the market for a few years, PenCoreTM applications are mining-specific. Falconbridge has established a partnership with Pen Systems to create these and similar products. Falconbridge uses the GEOBASETM format in its Sudbury mines, while its VMS Exploration Group employs the PROLOGTM version. Placer Dome are using PenCore for their GeoLog solution and numerous clients such as Kinross in Timmins are using PenCore with the GemCom family of software tools. Thanks to field testing and feedback from our client's geologists and personnel, PenCoreTM is a refined system readily used by any field professional.
PEN COMPUTINGOn portable pen-based computers, the user inputs data with a pen instead of a keyboard. The pen can also be used as a mouse for selecting items and putting ink on the screen. Ink can then be converted to typed characters in a form-filling application, or, in the case of sketches, to vectors for CAD applications. PenCoreTM lets the user rapidly navigate through various comprehensive logging features, from rock types to assay requests, using graphical push buttons. Even a seasoned geologist is quickly able to adapt to PenCoreTM, since it is based on long-standing mining industry formats. The bottom-line rationale for deploying this technology in an exploration operation is time. Falconbridge operations in the Sudbury area have quoted time savings of: "2.25 hours per log and 1/2 man-year per season". Many other users have doubled the log's productivity. Total Data Quality Management and the elimination of paper also make this system a vital tool for core logging.DATA COLLECTIONMore traditional data-collection devices include laptop computers, keypads, bar-code readers and the like. They have proved their worth in the field through greater accuracy and fast turnaround of information. The traditional data collector has one drawback, however - it cannot be upgraded or modified. As all pen-based software is graphical and programmable it is a simple and extremely cost-effective matter to implement changes or add new functionality. This feature ensures preservation of investment. Once committed to pen-based computing the same hardware should last for a long time to come.
GETTING STARTEDPen Systems Inc. can provide qualified mining companies with demonstrations of PenCoreTM either running on a pen computer or on a standard desktop PC.Running the demonstration package in conjunction with the users guide will quickly illustrate the benefits and ease of use PenCoreTM provides. Once you have examined PenCoreTM, you will probably want to field test the product. With advanced notice, we will be able to provide you with a field unit for evaluation. Remember - PenCoreTM can be modified to suit your individual operation as required. AT A GLANCE FACTS
